John Wooden was born and raised in the country’s heartland, in the basketball haven of Indiana. As a youth he started shooting hoops into a tomato basket nailed onto the side of a barn on his family’s farm, and developed into an all-state high school player.  He then went to college at Purdue, where he became a 3-time All-American and the College Player of the Year in 1932.  He was nicknamed the “Indiana Rubber Man” for his ability bounce back up after throwing himself all over the court...
